Talk 4 Writing

We love writing at Haveley Hey and take pride in providing creative learning opportunities for our children.

We teach writing using the Talk4Writing model and have taken part in the Primary Writing Project to further develop our skills and provision ensuring that our children have the best possible Writing provision.

We use Talk4Writing, developed by Pie Corbett. This approach supports children to read and write for a variety of purposes and audiences. Each half term children in KS1 and KS2 complete a non-fiction unit and a fiction unit, each unit usually lasts around 3 weeks.

The units focus on imaginative, engaging and vocabulary rich texts which the children rehearse and internalise. Talk for Writing enables children to imitate the key vocabulary and structures within a text through fun activities, mapping out the text and fast paced grammar games. This is followed by close reading of the text, which allows children to think deeply about the toolkit used for each genre of text. Once the children are familiar with their text model, they are supported, by shared writing, to create their own version of the text. The approach gradually moves from dependence towards independence, with the teacher using shared and guided teaching to develop the ability in children to write effectively and creatively.

Spelling Shed

As a school we use Spelling Shed to support spelling at home. Your child will have been sent home with their username and password. Spelling Shed has personalised spellings to practise for your child. Children can enjoy playing a range of fun games to support their spellings and also join hives to have competitions with their friends!
